Here is a bit of required reading for 1) anyone who ever thought that they wanted to work in government, 2) anyone who currently works in government but thinks maybe it's just their office that is bad, and 3) anyone else.

I'm Just Saying...
Have you ever wondered what a Libertarian is? How about a communitarian (opposite of a Libertarian)? Apparently, Libertarianism is on the rise and if you want to begin to understand this cultural phenomenon you should read this article. Political pundits feel like Libertarians might become very influential in the future political landscape. In fact, you may already be one. Personally, I hate all these labels that we’ve given one another, but if you’re wondering where you stand politically take this small quiz. You might be surprised—then again maybe not.
So, I’m thinking about moving to Beantown right now? It seems like everyone’s finding their groove there: Red Sox in the World Series; the Pats looking like a team that could go undefeated; Boston College making a run at a national championship; the Celtics looking like a playoff contender for the first time in years, er, decades; and even the native Bostonian, Ben Affleck, seems to have mustered some long-dormant critical praise out of his latest directorial debut.
So, I haven’t been watching much TV lately, but I just wanted to recommend ABC’s ‘Pushing Daises.’ I haven’t even watched a full episode—just 10 min. actually—but I kind of took a liking to it. Bolstered with rave reviews, it’s kind of a quirky and witty dramedy that’s akin to a Coen brothers film (i.e., ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou,’ ‘Raising Arizona,’ and ‘The Hudsucker Proxy’). Here’s the link.
Thanks Hayley for supplying a link to the new Star Trek cast compared to their older counterparts. The similarities are uncanny. Check it out.
Finally, I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that J.K. Rowling announced that Dumbledore is gay. Are you really surprised? It seems like most bespectacled British men who wrap themselves in glittery robes are.

All the Presidents Are Men
Movies.com compiled a list of the presidential wannabes favorite movies, I thought they were pretty funny. Here's what they said:
They're all wooing Hollywood — and the latest to enter the race was even (gasp!) an actor. So, we wondered, what movies do they really watch on a quiet Saturday night. We didn't ask; they didn't tell. Here's what we think the main candidates' top picks should be, and why!
RUDY GIULIANI (former mayor)
World Trade Center (2006)
"Didn't have enough of a certain strong, unwavering mayor, but all in all, very moving — and very effective at fundraising."
HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON
(U.S. Senator)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
"Jimmy Stewart is wonderful as a principled man who speaks his mind even after winning election to the Senate. My all-time favorite science-fiction movie."
JOHN McCAIN (U.S. Senator)
Hostel (2005)
"My fellow GOP contenders think torture's a nifty idea. I think they should watch this movie — and then imagine it lasting for six long years in a POW camp in 'Nam. Still sound nifty?"
BARACK OBAMA (U.S. Senator)
Hitch (2005)
"Will Smith is the best. I can't get enough of how he turns a stiff Kevin James into one cool dude. Hmmm, wonder if he's available for consultations?"
FRED THOMPSON
(actor, former U.S. Senator)
In the Line of Fire (1993)
"A crackerjack thriller; plus, I get to be the White House chief of staff, establishing my credibility as an Oval Office occupant."
JOHN EDWARDS (former U.S. Senator)
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
"Finally! A movie that depicts the challenges faced by those of us with good hair like George Clooney! Excessive combing is just one price we pay. Four-hundred dollars is another."
MITT ROMNEY
(former governor, Salt Lake Winter Games savior)
Blades of Glory (2007)
"Everything I love — Winter Olympic-style pageantry, ice rinks, manly male figure skaters."

To Boldly Go…
Casting for the new Star Trek movie seems to be rounding out as new reports are trickling in of the latest to join the pre-television series U.S.S. Enterprise. It appears that J.J. Abrams, the director, is taking the franchise into a bold new direction. Instead of using past Star Trek television stars, Abrams is casting young and relatively unknown actors to man the 60s sci-fi ship. While trying to appeal to a broader audience is the obvious reason that Abrams has broken from Star Trek tradition, some Trekkers are worried that he may fly the franchise off course, however, most have taken a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude.
A Mexican politician was stripped of his first-place title after it was uncovered that he took a shortcut. Officials opened an investigation after a race photographer noted that he finished the marathon wearing a jacket and long running tights; he also wasn’t sweating and he looked like he had just come from a fiesta. He shot back that he never intended to complete the race, but was simply crossing the finish line to get to all of his things. Since when do you cross a finish line pumping your arms in the air just to collect your belongings? Here’s the video. Compare his triumphant finish to that of his running counterparts who are on the verge of death.
So, what did you guys think of ‘The Office’ last night. I was reading some blogs on-line and some people were complaining that the hour-long episodes are just too much. Even my brother said that it seemed like they were just trying to fill space in some areas. I’m not sure how I feel. I think that I laughed quite a bit: Meredith’s hip cast, Andy’s song to Angela, Michael and Dwight making fun of Ryan. But, I would agree that the whole kidnapping incident seemed a little too ‘out there.’ Kind of like when Michael drove his car into the river on the last episode. I don’t know. What do you guys and gals think?
One last thing: I couldn’t watch ‘The Office’ on DVR because it wasn’t working for some reason, so I sat and watched all the commercials for fear that I might miss even one second. There’s all these lame Jerry Seinfeld promos for his new movie on. Uh, L.A.M.E. I didn’t think they were very funny at all, and it caused me not to want to watch his new movie.

A Call For Help
In a previous link, Jed arleady discussed the IQ of South Carolina. While Jed and others laugh at this lovely young woman, I am standing whole heartedly behind her cause.
Oh, like you've never botched a beauty pageant answer on live TV? If you're so perfect why don't you go and live in The Iraq? After you've washed yourself of your arrogance, why don't you get on the maps cause.
My plea is that you will contribute to the education of our children: http://mapsforus.org. My personal favorite maps are the "Map of Sparta", "Map for my Plumber," and"Map to Get Map on Maps.org." I implore you. Help the future of our U.S. America children (especially South Carolina).
Thanks to Jed's watchful eye, the link has been fixed.

Just a couple of things this morning…
Rilo Kiley is now streaming their newest album on MySpace. They are amazing and coming to concert Sept. 10 along with Modest Mouse. I’m going with my friend if anyone wants to come.
I didn’t watch High School Music 2 over the weekend, but apparently a lot of people did (including some in my family). It became the highest seen television program from a cable channel in the history of the universe or something. I think that has to do with the fact that it was filmed in St. George—those red cliffs are addicting man.
This little video has been seen on youtube quite a bit lately. It's entitled ‘Mitt Romney Melts Down/Implodes Over Mormonism Questions.’ The thing is, he actually holds his own here and comes up with some pretty good points and doesn’t necessarily come off that bad. You can tell he’s upset, but I think he does a fairly decent job of keeping his cool.

The official Dunder Mifflin website, complete with Ryan’s promotion.
Stephen King gives the last word on Jo Rowling's HP legacy.
*p.s. some of the above clips have a little bit of language in them (sorry).

I graduated with Dick Cheney (yawn)
On Friday last week I graduated from BYU…again. I think it would be appropriate for people to refer to me as Master Jedi from now on—I think I’ve earned it, like my father before me. Actually, my father is an O.D., which stands for something like Obi-Wan Darth, I’m not really sure. Anyway, before I was to graduate from the Marriott School of Management, I went to commencement the day before. You know, I’m not really sure what the difference between “commencement” and “graduation” is. The only difference I could really tell was that there were more people dressed like they were at a Harry Potter costume party during commencement—I kept looking for the Sorting Hat, but to no avail. However, one of the cool things that Masters Students get that those other lowly Bachelors don’t (suckers) is a hood! I’m not even kidding. I know it sounds weird and you’re all envious, but depending on what college you graduate from you get to accessorize your Hogwarts fatigues with colored hoods. Granted, you don’t actually hood your cranium with them, unless you wanted to pose for amazingly awesome pictures with your friends afterward, they’re more for looks and ego stroking.
But even dressing like Harry Potter wasn’t enough to compensate for the complete and utter feeling of boredom that overtook me after sitting for two and a half hot and uncomfortable hours. And this was before the ceremony even began! The Vice President was the commencement speaker and was receiving an honorary doctorate of public service from the BY. Apparently, because Dick Cheney is such a high-ranking official we had to sit and listen to American Idol wannabes. Don’t get me wrong, Broadway musicals are cool and all, but being forced to listen to an extremely loud PA system with terrible acoustics while stereotypical Zoobies sang and danced with arms and legs that flailed about as if independent form their bodies isn't my ideal form of entertainment. Then again, watching highlights of BYU’s last football season was a pure delight—the Beck-to-Harline “Answered Prayer” pass in multiple angles gave me chills. (btw, congrats to Beck for getting drafted by the Miami Dolphins on Saturday!)
As I was saying, it was due to this confounded security screening that I was sitting there in a complete state of discomfort for so long, but I kept telling myself that it would be worth it to hear Dick Cheney speak. When he finally did enter with President Hinckley, there was a sense of excitement as the crowd cheered him and gave them a standing ovation. They would go on to cheer him repeatedly during his apolitical speech, interrupting it 18 times with applause, but I kept waiting for something more controversial—something the media could get a hold of. This is a man that regularly swims in a sea of controversy. Whether it’s the war in
But all the controversy surrounding his coming was much ado about nothing. This isn’t to say that his speech wasn’t good, in fact, it was near perfect—perfectly safe. I would even say that I probably enjoyed the student’s speech beforehand a little more, since it was filled with literary anecdotes, aplomb, and real inside jokes. (When he asked Cecil O. for a tuition refund since he was graduating without getting married, I nearly doubled over). It’s just the thought that a man who could bring such a firestorm of protestors and bloggers to rally against him in
