'24': And on the seventh day...

Spoiler Alert!!! Go here if you want to see what the next season of 24 will bring. I have to say that this new information could be absolute brilliance or more 'jump the shark' material. If you don't want to read about my impressions of the new season developments, DON'T READ THE COMMENTS!

Ok, if you didn't read the link: Tony is coming back for season 7! First of all, I love Tony. No literally. Ok, maybe not literally, but figuratively. Ok, I have a man crush on him.

Anyway, I think what makes any television series, movie, or book great is it's cache of intriguing characters. However, '24' has an absurd addiction to killing off all it's characters, except for Jack. While this is meant to 'shock and awe' the audience, I always felt it was more of a gimmick. Eventually every season we're left with the never-wrong Jack and a contingent of new faces that are probably gonna get popped off anyway (e.g. Milo). We don't care after awhile--there's no buy-in.

What made Tony and Michelle so great as characters, was that we got to see their relationship build up over three or four seasons. Plus, they were interesting and unique. Of course, when they brought Tony back in season 5 it was almost sad to watch him because he was more of a side-show then an actual character. Bringing him back for season 7 almost sounds extremely schmaltzy to me. If you're gonna bring him back, then bring him back into the show, not just as a sad shell of what he used to be.

We'll just have to wait and see, '24' has the ability to always surprise me. Even in the awful season 6, I still couldn't predict everything. So, it just might work. "Yeah." (In Tony's whispery, sarcastic voice.)
