From 'Hell' to 'Hobbit'?

Seems the Hobbit race is nearing the finish line, and the winner just may be … Guillermo del Toro. The Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director reportedly is not just at the top of the wish list but in negotiations to direct the two-part prequel to The Lord of the Rings, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel The Hobbit. Del Toro has been atop both Peter Jackson's and New Line's wish list since Jackson and the studio made up in December, after a long financial battle that put the entire future of the Hobbit movie franchise in jeopardy. As for when production might actually get under way, it isn't likely to be soon — no script has been pennedv and won't be until the WGA strike is settled. A start date for the $150 million pair of flicks is tentatively set for 2009.

What do you guys think...Do you think he's the man?? Check out his movies below:

I'm telling you Guillermo del Toro knows fantasy. Having seen Pan's, Hellboy and Blade 2, I'm sure the Hobbit will be very rich visually.

February 5, 2008 - Although he was reported last week as being officially on board to direct The Hobbit, as well as one additional film based on the works of J.R.R. Toklien, director Guillermo del Toro has now clarified the situation, saying his involvement with the New Line project "is not a sure thing."

In an exclusive interview with TotalFilm.com, del Toro explained, "Well, the reality is that the Hobbit story has broken early because the negotiations have not ended and The Hobbit is not a sure thing."

The Hellboy II helmer added, "The reality is, I will know that it's happening when we have the final word and I am fully and officially on board."

But lest fans think del Toro is suddenly shying away from the project, he emphasized that he "would love it" if he got to direct The Hobbit, which he said was the Tolkien tale that most resembled a fairy tale.

kristian - well, i hope del toro directs. he seems to be the perfect fit. peter jackson kind of came from a horror/thriller background, which seems to be del toro, but with a more fantastical flair. maybe with the writers' strike ending, things will be cleared up.
